ILLYRIA, OR WHAT YOU WILL

freely adapted from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night

co-adapted with Mitchell Hébert

ILLYRIA, OR WHAT YOU WILL reimagines Shakespeare's comedy of mixed-signal love as a bohemian cabaret set in an underground queer club in early ’80s Manhattan, where identity, sex, and gender are what you will—and everyone finds a freedom to be who they truly are. But who will fall in love with whom?! This fresh slant on a classic shakes up Shakespeare with the driving beats and dingy glamor of the post-disco era.

WSC AVANT BARD - ARLINGTON, VA - FALL 2018
dir. Mitchell Hébert

"[ILLYRIA] offers a winning vehicle for exploring gender identity and love in all forms in ways that complement Shakespeare’s work and have relevance to today’s world .... In today’s divisive world, a play this imaginative, provocative and entertaining, in which all get along and there’s a happy resolution to romantic entanglements, is especially satisfying."

"Hipster characters — who represent various spots on the gender and sexuality spectra — vamp, spar and carouse throughout the Gunston Arts Center’s Theatre Two ... Club Illyria is a diverting high-concept premise, and one that nicely matches the carnivalesque gender-, identity- and music-related twists of Twelfth Night.”

- Steven McKnight, DC THEATRE SCENE

- Celia Wren, THE WASHINGTON POST

"ILLYRIA is fabulous, darlings. The clothes are to die for. The décor is out of its 1980s mind. The music is as eclectic as it is electric ... In a time of peril for love of many kinds, and people of many kinds, taking out into the world the love that reigns in ILLYRIA is not only sweet and beautiful, but more necessary than ever."
